How does the Master Plumber exam work?
The Master Plumber exam is a tradesman exam: one person is licensed, and a contracting firm in that trade also needs its own Board for Contractors license.
- Tradesman licenses are issued by the Board for Contractors through its Tradesmen program, for electrical, plumbing, HVAC and gas fitting.
- The board has to approve you before PSI lets you schedule. The exam fee is $100 for journeyman and $125 for master.
- Pre-license education is required, and renewals need 3 hours of continuing education for electrical, plumbing and HVAC and 1 hour for gas fitting.
- Residential plumbing and residential HVAC mechanic licenses, added on April 1, 2025, need less experience than a journeyman license.
Which Master Plumber option should I choose?
The Pre-Printed Tabs at $29.99 is the lightest way into the Master Plumber exam: pre-printed permanent tabs for the reference books, allowed in the exam room. Highlighted and Tabbed Books at $295 are the biggest time saver on an open-book test, because the references arrive ready for the exam room. The Online Exam Prep Course at $295 adds timed practice you can run on a phone between jobs. Live Virtual Training at $495 suits people who learn better with an instructor and a fixed schedule. The Ultimate Rental Package at $1,310 is the most complete option: highlighted and tabbed rental books, the online course and live training.
